STAND UP: Challenge Coins

Challenge Coins are small coins with an insignia representing a squadron, training, unit, tour, ranking, and/or accomplishments. These coins are mostly used to boost morale. They are typically round and heavy but can be all shapes with various colors.   These coins are carried in the pockets of most military members.  They are typically given to individuals upon completion of trainings, tours, or joining of units by higher ranking individuals.

Why do they carry them?
Mostly morale, but at any given time someone can be challenged.  If an individual decides to challenge others, they simply slap the coin down on a table and everyone must then present their own coins.  If someone can not produce a coin, they are required to purchase the next round of drinks for those who did have their coin.  If everyone presents a coin, then the challenger must buy the next round.

Here are a few that Matt has acquired.  The Bottom right coins: The colonel coin was given to Matt at graduation by his father and the triangle coin is the coin he received for IFF training.
Im not sure what coin he has on him today, but if I were to guess.... it would be his A-10 warthog coin.

This is a picture of the Hollywood guard coin (which is where Kramer will be after he finishes training).  I think its very unique!
There is much debate on the origin of this tradition.  I highly suggest you visit wikipedia to read further on the challenge coins.  Here is a link:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenge_coin

I hope you all enjoy my Stand Up posts when I do post them.  It has been so fun learning all the rules, the traditions, and the lifestyle of the military life.  I try to pick out what I think is interesting that I knew little about before marrying into the military!
